Description
The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco is one of the most popular and eye-catching algae-eating plecos in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Known for its intense solid red to orange coloration, compact size, and peaceful nature, this premium variety of Ancistrus brings both beauty and utility to community tanks and planted aquariums.
The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco is a selectively bred color strain of the common bristlenose pleco (Ancistrus sp.). Unlike larger plecos that outgrow most aquariums, red bristlenose plecos stay compact and are ideal for home tanks. Males develop distinctive facial bristles as they mature, while females typically have shorter or minimal bristles. Their bright red coloration stands out dramatically against green plants, driftwood, and dark substrate.
A full-grown Super Red Bristlenose Pleco typically reaches 4–5 inches (10–13 cm), making it perfect for 20–30 gallon aquariums and larger. The body displays a rich red to deep orange tone, which intensifies under proper lighting and nutrition. This manageable size makes the Super Red Pleco a far better option than common plecos for most freshwater setups.
Super Red Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful and community-friendly. They spend most of their time grazing on algae, driftwood, and décor surfaces. Excellent Super Red Bristlenose Pleco tank mates include: Tetras, Rasboras, Angelfish, Gouramis, Corydoras, Rainbowfish, shrimp, and snails. Avoid aggressive cichlids or large territorial bottom dwellers.
