Description
The Red Lyretail Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a selectively bred form of the classic Swordtail, prized for its flowing, lyre-shaped caudal fin and brilliant red hues. This livebearer’s energetic swimming and peaceful nature make it a perfect addition to both modern aquascapes and traditional community tanks. The signature “sword” extension on the male’s tail adds dramatic movement and instantly draws attention.
Red Lyretail Swordtails reach an adult size of 4–5 inches (10–12 cm). Their deep red body is complemented by elegantly trailing lyretail fins and, in males, a striking sword-shaped extension. These features create a dynamic, lively display as the fish glide gracefully through the water.
Red Lyretail Swordtails are peaceful, active, and social. They thrive in community aquariums with other gentle fish such as Mollies, Platies, Fancy Guppies, Tetras, Rasboras, and Corydoras. As livebearers, they may produce fry if both males and females are present. Provide plenty of plants, open swimming space, and a secure lid, as Swordtails are excellent jumpers.
