Description
A selectively bred variety of the Swordtail species (Xiphophorus hellerii), the Firecracker Hi-Fin Swordtail showcases a vibrant red to fiery orange body with a long, graceful dorsal fin and signature sword-like tail extension. This stunning coloration earned it the name “Firecracker.” Originating from Central America’s warm, slow-moving rivers, this tropical swordtail fish is well-adapted to home aquariums and thrives in planted, well-oxygenated setups.
A full-grown Firecracker Swordtail reaches about 4–5 inches (10–12 cm) in length. Males feature the iconic elongated lower tail fin, the “sword”, and an elevated dorsal fin that gives the fish a regal presence. Females are slightly larger and rounder, often displaying a softer red-orange tone. The rich color of the Red Firecracker Swordtail stands out beautifully against lush green plants and darker substrates.
Firecracker Swordtails are peaceful, social, and active swimmers that do best in groups. They are perfect for community aquariums and mix well with Guppies, Mollies, Platies, Rasboras, Tetras, and Corydoras. A Firecracker Swordtail tank should have open swimming space, moderate water flow, and a mix of plants and décor for cover. Like all livebearers, females may produce fry frequently, making them a great choice for breeding projects.
