Description

Plant Profile

Rotala Macrandra Red, aka Giant Red Rotala, is widely considered one of the most vividly colored and stunning aquatic stem plants in the aquascaping hobby. Native to the warm, soft-water river systems of India, this species features delicate, wavy-edged leaves that grow in opposing pairs along supple stems. Under high-tech aquarium conditions, its foliage displays an exceptionally rich, saturated blood-red to deep magenta coloration. Known for its rapid growth rate of up to 4 inches per week in ideal environments, Rotala Macrandra Red makes a breathtaking focal centerpiece or structured Dutch-style street when contrasted against bright lime-green background plants.

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

Displays exceptionally intense, saturated blood-red and magenta foliage for unrivaled visual impact.

Delicate wavy-edged leaves add soft texture and high-contrast color depth to midground and background zones.

Classic high-tech aquascaping species ideal for creating striking centerpiece accents and Dutch-style plant streets.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight (or pot) and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the roots, then strip lower foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting. *Rotala macrandra stems and leaves are extraordinarily thin and delicate, so handle with extreme care during preparation.

Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into substrate, spacing them slightly apart so light reaches lower foliage and prevents leggy decay.

Provide high-intensity lighting and quality aquarium soil; mandatory pressurized CO2 injection alongside elevated phosphates (1.5–2.0 ppm) and lean nitrates (<10 ppm) are essential to prevent leaf stunting and maintain vivid red pigmentation. See our guide to growing red aquarium plants.

Maintain stable water parameters and avoid sudden environmental shifts to prevent leaf melt or stem rotting.

Trim main stem tops with sharp straight scissors once stems reach the desired height, and replant trimmings directly into substrate to propagate and expand coverage. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stems slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining strong light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. How do I bring out the bright red color in Rotala Macrandra Red?

Achieving deep blood-red coloration on Rotala Macrandra Red requires high-intensity lighting, high levels of injected CO2, soft water, and balanced fertilization. Maintaining elevated phosphate levels (1.5–2.0 ppm) while limiting nitrates (<10 ppm) encourages maximum color saturation and prevents stunted leaf tips.

3. How do I transition Rotala Macrandra Red from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into rich substrate under strong lighting and high CO2 while keeping water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its stiffer emersed leaves and sprout soft, wavy-edged red underwater foliage. Once new shoots take root, trim away old lower growth to encourage dense branching.
