Ethmostigmus sp. ‘Borneo Blue’ — Borneo Blue Centipede

Blue centipedes exist. And then there is the Ethmostigmus sp. ‘Borneo Blue’. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, this is one of the most strikingly colored centipedes in the entire hobby — a large, powerful Ethmostigmus draped in vivid electric blue that runs across the body and legs with an intensity that looks almost bioluminescent. This is not a subtle blue. It is the kind of blue that makes people stop mid-sentence and ask what they’re looking at.

Ethmostigmus as a genus is already underrepresented in the hobby relative to Scolopendra — and the Borneo Blue is the crown jewel of the group.

Why Collectors Love This Species

Electric blue coloration — vivid, saturated blue across the body and legs; one of the most intensely colored centipedes available in the hobby and a genuine showstopper in any collection

Ethmostigmus genus — a distinct and underrepresented genus in the hobby; collectors who want something beyond the standard Scolopendra lineup will find this species irresistible

Borneo locality — native to the biodiverse rainforests of Borneo; a geographically compelling and rare provenance

Impressive size — a large, robust centipede with substantial enclosure presence

Extreme rarity — seldom available in the US hobby; a genuine trophy specimen for serious centipede collectors

Active and observable — bold and fast-moving; a dynamic display animal

Care Overview

Origin: Old World — Borneo, Southeast Asia

Enclosure: Secure terrestrial setup with escape-proof lid; deep substrate (4–6″) with cork bark or flat rock hides; Ethmostigmus are fast and agile — a secure lid is non-negotiable

Temperature: 76–86°F

Humidity: Moderate to high — 75–85%; keep substrate consistently moist on one side; Borneo’s rainforest origin means this species appreciates higher ambient humidity

Diet: Crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized prey; aggressive feeder

Venom: ⚠️ Like all large centipedes, Ethmostigmus possesses medically significant venom. Bites are extremely painful and can cause intense localized pain, swelling, and systemic symptoms. Never handle — use long tongs for all maintenance without exception.

Experience Level: Advanced — for experienced invertebrate keepers only
