Brazilian Black Tarantula (Grammostola pulchra)
Discover the stunning Grammostola pulchra, commonly known as the Brazilian Black Tarantula. This iconic New World terrestrial species from Brazil is one of the most sought-after tarantulas in the hobby, prized by collectors for its jet-black velvety appearance, docile temperament, and impressive size—making it an excellent choice for intermediate to advanced keepers seeking one of the most beautiful tarantulas available.
Taxonomic Note
Important: We are labeling this species as Grammostola pulchra as that is how it was purchased and how it is widely known in the hobby. However, there is ongoing taxonomic debate within the community about whether this hobby staple may actually be Grammostola quirogai, the Uruguayan Black. Until this is definitively resolved, we are maintaining the traditional G. pulchra designation that collectors recognize and expect.
Why Choose Grammostola pulchra?
Stunning Jet-Black Coloration: Deep, velvety black body creates an elegant and dramatic display—one of the most beautiful tarantulas in the world
Moderate Size: Reaches 5-6 inch leg span at maturity
Docile Temperament: Calm and handleable, though may kick urticating hairs when defensive. Known for being the Black Labrador of Tarantulas
Slow Growth Rate: Takes several years to mature, making each stage rewarding to observe
Long-Lived: Females can live 20-30+ years with proper care—a true lifetime companion
Care Requirements
This terrestrial species thrives in a medium enclosure with moderate substrate depth (4-5 inches) for light burrowing, a hide, moderate humidity (65-75%), and warm temperatures (75-80°F).
