This beautiful New World terrestrial/semi-arboreal dwarf species from Colombia is one of the most colorful tarantulas in the hobby, prized by collectors for its vibrant orange and black pumpkin-like pattern, compact size, and active personality—making it an excellent choice for intermediate keepers seeking a unique and eye-catching dwarf tarantula.
Why Choose Hapalopus formosus?
Vibrant Pumpkin Pattern: Stunning orange and black striped pattern resembles a Halloween pumpkin—one of the most colorful dwarf species
Adorable Dwarf Size: Reaches only 3-4 inch leg span at maturity, perfect for compact setups
Active & Visible: Often out in the open, making it a joy to observe—much more active than many terrestrial species. Heavy webbing species
Semi-Arboreal Behavior: Enjoys both ground-level and vertical space, creating interesting display opportunities
Fast Growth Rate: Reaches maturity relatively quickly compared to larger species
Care Requirements
This terrestrial/semi-arboreal dwarf species thrives in a small enclosure with moderate substrate depth (3-4 inches) and vertical climbing space, a hide, moderate to high humidity (70-80%), and warm temperatures (75-82°F). Provide both ground-level and vertical décor for optimal enrichment.
