Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Coloration
The Raccoon Tiger Shrimp (Caridina mariae) is a striking and highly sought-after Caridina shrimp variety, known for its bold black tiger stripes on a translucent to amber body. Its unique raccoon-like facial markings and intricate patterns make it a standout addition to any shrimp-focused aquarium. These freshwater shrimp are selectively bred for their strong, well-defined striping and natural color variation, which creates an eye-catching display, especially in planted aquariums with dark aquarium substrates and lush aquatic plants.
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Size
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp reach an adult size of 1.0 to 1.2 inches (2.5 to 3 cm), making them perfect for nano tanks and Caridina shrimp colonies. Juveniles, typically 0.4 to 0.6 inches (1 to 1.5 cm) when shipped, gradually develop their full coloration and striping as they mature. Their compact size and active foraging behavior make them an engaging addition to aquascaped shrimp setups.
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Behavior
These freshwater shrimp species are peaceful, social, and highly active, often seen grazing on biofilm, algae, and detritus. They do best in species-only tanks or carefully curated community aquariums with compatible tank mates. Since they are sensitive to water fluctuations, maintaining a stable and well-maintained environment is essential for their health and longevity.
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Care Requirements
Like other high-grade Caridina shrimp, Raccoon Tiger Shrimp require soft, acidic water with stable parameters. They thrive in well-established aquariums with buffering shrimp substrates that help maintain ideal conditions. Regular water changes with remineralized RO/DI water are essential to prevent water parameter fluctuations.
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Compatibility
Due to their sensitive nature, Raccoon Tiger Shrimp should be housed in shrimp-only tanks or with non-aggressive tank mates such as:
Other Caridina shrimp (Crystal Red Shrimp, Pure Black Line Shrimp, Blue Bolt Shrimp)
Small, non-aggressive nano fish like Chili Rasboras and Emerald Dwarf Rasboras
Aquarium Snails like Nerite Snails, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, and Mystery Snails
Avoid these aggressive freshwater fish because they can see Raccoon Tiger Shrimp as food: Cichlids, Betta fighting fish, and Gouramis.
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp Diet
Raccoon Tiger Shrimp are natural algae eaters that graze on biofilm, algae, and organic matter. However, a nutrient-rich diet is necessary to support their growth, molting, and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:
Specialized Caridina shrimp pellets and algae wafers
Blanched vegetables (spinach, kale, zucchini)
Indian Almond Leaves to promote biofilm growth
Occasional protein-based shrimp supplements for improved health and breeding
Providing a varied, high-quality shrimp food ensures optimal health, longevity, and successful reproduction.
