Description

Plant Profile

Rotala Macrandra Green is a classic green cultivar of one of aquascaping’s most beloved stem plants. It’s adored by planted tank enthusiasts for its soft, wavy leaves and famously fast growth habit (up to 4 inches a week under optimal conditions). While maintaining a lush, light-green base coloration, its foliage can blush with delicate pink to subtle orange tips when grown under high-tech aquarium conditions with tuned nutrient dosing. Rotala Macrandra Green is a go-to choice for background or midground placement, forming dense, textured bushes that bring movement, color contrast, and that coveted “jungle” look to freshwater aquascapes.

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

Lush light-green wavy leaves that blush with delicate pink and orange tips under tuned fertilization and high lighting.

Fast vertical growth habit quickly creates thick, energetic background or midground hedges in high-tech planted aquariums.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip the lower inch of foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting. *Rotala have fragile leaves, so handle with care during preparation.

Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into soil, spacing them slightly apart so light reaches lower growth and prevents bottom leaf loss.

Provide high-intensity lighting and pressurized CO2 injection; maintain stable phosphate levels (1.5–2.0 ppm) and lean nitrates (10 ppm or less) to encourage pink-blushing leaf tips. See our guide to growing red aquarium plants.

Maintain stable water parameters and avoid sudden environmental shifts to prevent leaf melt or stem stunting.

Trim stem tops with straight scissors once they reach the water surface to encourage dense side branching, and replant trimmings directly into substrate to propagate. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stems slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining strong light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. How do I get my Rotala Macrandra Green to display pink tips?

To encourage subtle pink and reddish highlights on the leaf tips, provide high light intensity, pressurized CO2, and maintain high phosphate levels (around 1.5–2.0 ppm) with moderate-to-low nitrate concentration (10 ppm or less).

3. How do I transition Rotala Macrandra Green from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into rich substrate under strong lighting and pressurized CO2, keeping water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its rounded land foliage and sprout delicate, wavy underwater leaves. Once new shoots develop, trim away old lower growth to encourage dense branching.
