Description

The Yoyo Loach (also called Yo Yo Loach, Botia almorhae, or Pakistani Loach) is one of the most entertaining and eye-catching freshwater loaches in the aquarium hobby. Named for the distinctive “YOYO” pattern on their sides, these active bottom dwellers are a favorite among aquarists for their playful nature, striking markings, and usefulness in controlling snail populations. Whether you’re new to loaches or looking for an energetic addition to your tank, yoyo loaches are a top choice for community aquariums.

Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of northern India and Nepal, the yoyo loach is celebrated for its bold, maze-like black markings set against a silvery-white body. This loach is highly social, happiest in groups, and known for its curiosity and intelligence. You’ll often see yoyo loaches darting around the tank, exploring crevices, or even “clicking” to communicate with each other.

For healthy, happy yoyo loaches, a minimum yoyo loach tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for bigger groups or mixed-species communities. Provide a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of driftwood, rocks, and caves for hiding, and dense planting to mimic their natural habitat. Yoyo loaches appreciate good water flow, stable conditions, and a secure lid (they’re excellent jumpers!).

Yoyo loaches are generally peaceful but active, making them suitable for community tanks with similarly sized, gentle fish such as Tetras, Rasboras, Barbs, Corydoras, and Rainbowfish. Avoid housing them with slow-moving or long-finned fish, as yoyo loaches may be too boisterous for sensitive tankmates.

YoYo Loach Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the biggest size YoYo Loach gets?

Yoyo Loaches can reach a maximum size of 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm) in a spacious, well-maintained aquarium. Most individuals will grow to about 4 to 5 inches, but with excellent care and plenty of swimming space, some may reach their full adult size.

What is YoYo Loach’s lifespan?

With proper care, Yoyo Loaches have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years in home aquariums. Providing a balanced diet, clean water, and keeping them in groups helps ensure they live a long, healthy life.

Why is my YoYo Loach pale?

A Yoyo Loach may appear pale due to stress, sudden changes in water parameters, illness, or poor diet. Other causes include acclimating to a new tank, inadequate hiding spots, or being startled by tank activity. Make sure your water quality is excellent, provide plenty of cover, maintain a varied diet, and minimize stress to help restore your loach’s vibrant color.
