Description
Banana Plant (scientific name: Nymphoides Aquatica) surely catches your eyes not only by its peculiar root shape but the beautiful ‘floating heart’ its leaves resemble. That somehow explains the origin of its other common names, Big Floating Heart and Banana Lily.
Banana Plant will be the fantastic addition to your aquarium that you may be longing for. Its unusually thick root shape, banana-like, is a storage of nutrients which nurtures the whole plant, and makes it tough enough to withstand the low-light setups and flourish either fully or partially submerged. Not only so, Banana Plant can tolerate various water conditions and do best in soft water with pH range from 6.0 to 7.2. As such, Banana Plant is commonly considered a hardy and easy-going species.
Moreover, as a bulb aquatic plant, Banana Plant does not require any special technique in terms of planting. Gently let it sink to the bottom of your tank and it will soon be well-established. These aquatic plants are native to slow-moving waters in the southeastern United States. Hence, it will prefer the similar condition while being kept in your aquarium. As it grows, it will send its shoots toward the water surface. All you need to do while keeping this plant is notice its leaves and promptly prune them when you find that they likely block out the light from getting through.
