Description

Plant Profile

Water Wisteria is a popular, fast-growing green stem plant known for its deeply lobed, ruffled leaves that bring a lacy texture to an aquascape. Exceptionally easy to keep and ideal for beginners, this resilient species quickly absorbs excess nitrates to maintain water clarity and control algae. While naturally growing tall as a background centerpiece, frequent pruning easily trains Water Wisteria into a compact, bushy midground group.

*Form Notice: Photos display this plant in both its emersed (above-water) and submerged forms. Depending on nursery availability and seasonality, you may receive this plant in either form. Learn more about what to expect by reading our guide on Emersed vs. Submerged-Grown Aquatic Plants.

Key Features & Benefits

Fast-growing, hardy stem plant that easily adapts to low-tech tanks and absorbs excess nutrients to deter algae growth.

Unique ruffled, feather-like foliage delivers striking texture contrast when planted alongside broad-leaved species.

Care & Planting Instructions

Remove lead weight and cotton wrap (or foam) surrounding the base, then strip the lower inch of foliage so bare stems anchor cleanly into soil without rotting.

Use fine-tip pinsettes to push individual stems 1 to 2 inches into substrate, spacing them apart so light reaches lower growth.

Provide low-to-medium lighting for steady growth, though pressurized CO2 injection will yield faster development.

Maintain stable water parameters and avoid drastic environmental changes to prevent leaf melt or stem rotting.

Trim stem tops or cut lateral shoots with straight scissors to propagate new stems and encourage lush, compact branching. Read our trimming & propagation guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are the lower leaves falling off my stem plants?

Lower leaf loss (leggy stems) usually occurs when lighting cannot reach the bottom of the plant due to overcrowding or shading from larger plants. Spacing individual stems slightly apart during initial planting and maintaining adequate light penetration will keep lower leaves healthy.

2. Why does my Water Wisteria look different than the underwater photos?

When grown emersed (above water), Water Wisteria produces firmer, rounder green leaves with serrated edges. Once submerged in your aquarium, new shoots will transition into its iconic, feathery, multi-lobed underwater form.

3. How do I transition Water Wisteria from emersed to submerged growth?

When transitioning from emersed to submerged growth, plant bare stems securely into rich substrate under medium lighting and keep water parameters stable. As new growth adapts, the plant will shed its rounded, thick land leaves and sprout delicate, lace-like underwater foliage. Once new shoots reach 2 to 3 inches in length, trim away the old emersed lower growth to encourage dense, bushy branching.
